Engineering is an adventure when done right. We do not work best when limited to “the way things are done” – we seek the challenge of what might be done better.
If “Nobody wants to do anything” then engineering is reduced to looking up solutions in books. But stagnation like that is retrograde – everything just gets slightly worse all the time. Every society needs technologists – people who not only know how, but who want to show off better ways of doing, making, building, which are not in use already.
This message is for those who think that our task is just fixing things. If our creative impulse is not allowed some freedom to act the society will never “do anything” to move ahead.
